AMD, Samsung Explore Foundry Partnership Amid Rising AI Demand

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) CEO Lisa Su continues to explore a foundry partnership with Samsung Electronics Co. This initiative aims to expand AMD's manufacturing capacity as demand for artificial intelligence (AI) processors and CPUs outstrips supply. The potential collaboration builds on existing ties between the two companies. Dr. Su plans to meet with the head of Samsung Electronics Co.’s semiconductor business on Wednesday. This meeting represents the latest in-person discussion between the AI industry leaders. Dr. Su recently visited South Korea, where she met with semiconductor industry leaders and government officials. These discussions focused on potential AI-focused business partnerships. Samsung and AMD have expanded their strategic collaboration on next-generation AI memory solutions. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to formalize this expanded partnership. This collaboration addresses the ongoing memory crunch affecting the semiconductor industry. The technology and AI trade dominated the market narrative on Tuesday. Major chipmakers saw jumps amid increased optimism and other market catalysts. AMD shares surged to an annual high on Tuesday. This rise occurred amid a jump in AI-related names and increasing analyst optimism. The company's stock climbed above $600 recently, pushing its market capitalization beyond $1 trillion. AMD's share price stood at approximately $656 on October 6, representing a 198.69% increase over twelve months. Digital Realty Trust (DLR) is also involved in the AI ecosystem. Blackfuel chose Digital Realty Trust’s Barcelona BCN1 facility for a liquid-cooled AI inference platform. This platform is built on Dell and AMD hardware. Digital Realty Trust’s share price increased by 2.66% in one day and 4.58% in seven days. Its year-to-date share price return is 19.11%. AMD has also granted warrants to OpenAI and Meta Platforms, Inc. (META). Each company holds warrants for as many as 160 million shares, with an exercise price of one cent. These terms were disclosed in AMD’s filings. The total potential issuance is 320 million shares. U.S. stock futures were largely unchanged on Tuesday evening. This followed the S&P 500 and Nasdaq hitting record closing highs. Investors are now focused on Federal Reserve meeting minutes and the start of the third-quarter earnings season. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq notched record highs on Tuesday, driven by AI optimism. The ongoing discussions between AMD and Samsung could lead to further capacity expansion.
