Cineplex names Bill Walker CEO, initiates strategic alternatives review

By EC Assets · Published

Cineplex Inc. has initiated a review of strategic alternatives while appointing Bill Walker as its new Chief Executive Officer. The dual announcements mark a transitional period for Canada's largest cinema operator. Walker assumes his role immediately, succeeding Ellis Jacob, who announced his retirement plans last year. The board's decision to launch a strategic evaluation highlights a growing sentiment within the company. This sentiment suggests that public markets may not be adequately reflecting the long-term growth expectations or operational value of the company. The review aims to bridge any potential gap between the company's public market valuation and the intrinsic value of its assets. As part of this strategic review, a sale of the business is under consideration. Cineplex has engaged Goldman and TD to assist with this process. Ellis Jacob, who led Cineplex for over three decades and built it into a significant national media and entertainment enterprise in Canada, will now serve as a special advisor to the board. Bill Walker previously served as CEO of Landmark Cinemas. His appointment comes as the company explores various strategic options for its future.
