India, US Near Trade Pact Amid Section 301 Tariff Discussions

India and the United States are nearing a trade agreement. The terms of this pact are linked to potential relief from Section 301. India is expected to discuss Washington’s Section 301 investigation and potential tariff measures with U.S. trade officials. A U.S. delegation, led by Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch, will conduct three days of talks. These discussions with Indian trade officials are scheduled to take place in New Delhi, beginning on Tuesday. The U.S. and India had reached an initial understanding for a trade deal in February. One Indian government source indicated that India needs to discuss the tariff rate, the impact of the Section 301 probe, and aim for a competitive tariff rate compared to direct competition. The United States may assure India that no additional tariffs under Section 301 will be imposed. This assurance would be contingent on the conclusion of an interim trade deal between the two countries. The deal could potentially reduce U.S. tariffs on Indian goods to approximately 15-16%. American manufacturers experienced growth for the fifth consecutive month in May. This marks a significant streak over the past four years. However, concerns persist among business leaders regarding Trump tariffs and an increase in inflation linked to the Iran war. This article is intended for informational purposes only.
