Intel Drops 20% on Soft Fourth-Quarter Outlook and Supply Headwinds
By EC Assets · Published
Shares of Intel experienced a severe downturn following the release of the company's latest financial results. A disappointing fourth-quarter forecast rapidly eclipsed an earnings beat, prompting an aggressive retreat in the stock. The slump pushed the semiconductor manufacturer toward its worst trading session in two years. The market reaction set the firm on track for a $128 billion wipeout in market value. Intel shares dropped 20% during Thursday trading after the chipmaker delivered its fourth-quarter outlook. Although the company posted financial results that surpassed expectations for the preceding period, the subdued forward projections quickly reshaped market expectations. Operational constraints and mounting expenditures drove the sudden reversal. Intel Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan addressed the operating landscape during the company's earnings call. Tan stated that the industry continues to navigate one of the most significant supply shortages in history. Those manufacturing hurdles have hampered Intel's capacity to produce sufficient artificial intelligence server chips to satisfy demand. At the same time, the chipmaker is contending with persistent softness in its personal computer division. Rising memory-chip costs have increased component prices and dented demand for personal computers. Pressure intensified further as corporate information technology departments curtailed budgets allocated for laptop purchases. The disclosure of these operational difficulties generated broader reverberations across the semiconductor industry. Shares of rival chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices slid following Intel's financial update, reflecting growing concern over shared market vulnerabilities. Industry participants linked the decline to mutual exposure in artificial intelligence hardware production and personal computer sales. Investors will monitor upcoming earnings disclosures from Advanced Micro Devices to determine whether the competitor faces identical bottlenecks in artificial intelligence server chips and similar headwinds across personal computer shipments.
