Smith & Nephew Halts Merger Talks With J&J Orthopaedics Division

By EC Assets · Published

Discussions to combine Smith & Nephew with Johnson & Johnson's orthopaedics unit have collapsed following an impasse over leadership. The proposed transatlantic mega-merger ended after the parties failed to agree on who would lead the consolidated entity. Disagreements over the chief executive officer position halted negotiations between the two healthcare businesses. The transaction broke down amid a leadership tug of war between negotiating teams. Smith & Nephew rejected terms that would have placed a former chief executive in charge of the combined operations. That refusal effectively terminated discussions regarding the integration of the British medical device manufacturer with the American healthcare conglomerate's orthopaedics division. Following the termination of talks on October 23, 2026, shares of Smith & Nephew rose 0.53 percent under the ticker SN. The company also maintains a listing under the ticker SNN, having previously conducted its Quarter 1 2026 sales and trading report earlier in the year.
