Uber Misses Booking Targets Amid Overseas Driver Constraints and Middle East Tensions
By EC Assets · Published
Uber Technologies reported weaker-than-expected ride-hail bookings and trips after driver supply constraints overseas hampered its core operations. The company delivered a disappointing profit outlook, attributing the muted holiday projections to ongoing tensions in the Middle East alongside international driver shortages. While third-quarter profit and revenue surpassed analyst expectations, its full-year earnings guidance missed market estimates at the midpoint. The ride-hailing company delivered a 20 percent increase in third-quarter gross bookings on Wednesday. However, international operations faced operational headwinds. Overseas driver shortages restricted capacity and contributed directly to ride-hail bookings falling short of internal and market targets. Regional instability added further pressure to the platform's performance. The company identified ongoing conflict in the Middle East as a primary factor dampening holiday demand, leading to softer trip numbers and a subdued quarterly forecast. Uber equity traded slightly lower following the update, down 0.16 percent. The Middle East remains a key competitive and strategic battleground for ride-hailing networks. Careem, the primary regional rival to Uber, entered early talks to raise up to $500 million in fresh capital from investors to expand its own market presence. Simultaneously, autonomous vehicle deployment is accelerating across major metropolitan hubs in the region. Uber expanded its partnership with Chinese autonomous vehicle developer WeRide to deploy at least 1,200 robotaxis across the Middle East. The rollout spans Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Riyadh as Chinese autonomous driving firms pursue aggressive international growth initiatives. Market participants will monitor the rollout of the 1,200 robotaxis across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Riyadh, alongside progress on Careem's $500 million funding round and upcoming international driver supply metrics.
