Unipol Stock Rises on Intesa Sanpaolo Deal

Unipol shares increased by 3.1%. The rise follows a transaction involving Intesa Sanpaolo and Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS). This transaction includes the sale of 635 MPS branches to Unipol. Intesa Sanpaolo agreed to sell a banking business comprising 635 MPS branches to Unipol. This agreement is intended to address competition concerns. The deal also includes the Siena headquarters if Intesa Sanpaolo's takeover of MPS succeeds. The transaction with Unipol is valued at €3.5 billion. Unipol is the main investor in BPER Banca. The insurer plans to propose a merger between the acquired entity and BPER Banca. The merger is structured to allow Unipol to obtain de facto control over BPER Banca. Unipol denied that former Mediobanca CEO Alberto Nagel advised on its agreement with Intesa Sanpaolo. Intesa Sanpaolo previously made a €30.6 billion unsolicited cash-and-share bid to acquire Monte dei Paschi di Siena.
