Kroger announced its intention to acquire the supermarket chain Giant Eagle in a $1.65 billion transaction. The grocery retailer stated its plan to purchase Giant Eagle on Wednesday. This acquisition aims to boost Kroger's scale in a competitive grocery market. The acquisition is expected to formally close in 2027. The Kroger Co. will acquire Giant Eagle for approximately $1.65 billion. This transaction follows Kroger's previous $25 billion merger plan, which reportedly failed. Kroger has offered the lowest overall cost for its own-brand products, with a total basket cost of $30.00. Walmart followed with a total basket cost of $30.95, and Aldi with $33.15.
