SpaceX Explores Boost Mobile Deal to Expand Wireless Network Footprint

By EC Assets · Published

SpaceX is in active talks to acquire EchoStar wireless brand Boost Mobile or secure direct access to its wireless network. The consumer mobile provider operates by leasing network infrastructure from telecommunications carriers AT&T and T-Mobile. The negotiations mark a significant expansion of commercial telecommunications initiatives led by Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk. The discussions follow a separate $17 billion deal in which SpaceX bought wireless spectrum from EchoStar. Gaining access to Boost Mobile or purchasing the asset directly would provide SpaceX with immediate reach into terrestrial consumer cellular networks. Boost Mobile currently maintains wholesale leasing arrangements to route customer traffic across the existing infrastructure of both AT&T and T-Mobile. The wireless network talks coincide with ongoing satellite communications projects at SpaceX. The company confirmed it will test Starlink direct satellite-to-cell service in partnership with T-Mobile this year. Rapid expansion across satellite communications and artificial intelligence operations helped SpaceX generate a larger quarterly profit than expected on Tuesday. Capital commitments at the company have risen sharply alongside these operations. Musk announced that SpaceX closed on $40 billion in financing to pay for specialized chips used to power artificial intelligence systems. Musk also issued warnings regarding neoclouds and raised the possibility of a future merger between SpaceX and electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla. These strategic discussions emerge during a period of sharp valuation swings for SpaceX. Shares of SpaceX broke below $140 on Friday, completely erasing a prior post-earnings jump. The drop contributed to a market value decline of more than $500 billion in less than a month. Concurrently, commercial launch customers are bracing for the operational phaseout of the Falcon rocket. In the broader wireless market, carrier partner T-Mobile is planning workforce layoffs and retail store closures across Washington state. In political and regulatory developments, Donald Trump purchased more than $1 million in SpaceX debt instruments days before unveiling his administration space policy. In California, a court ruled that SpaceX can still face a sex discrimination lawsuit filed by a remote worker, company's prior operating headquarters in Hawthorne. SpaceX is scheduled to test its Starlink satellite-to-cell network with T-Mobile during the current year. Observers await further details on the negotiations regarding Boost Mobile network access and the planned retirement of the Falcon rocket fleet.
